The interests of the laboratory's staff are currently focused mainly on the systematics and phylogeny of parasitic nematodes. The laboratory's main research subjects include entomopathogenic nematodes of the families Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae, and parasitic nematodes of various arthropods, mollusks, and oligochaetes. In recent years, nematodes of vertebrates have increasingly become a focus of study. Research is also carried out on the taxonomy of hairworms and mites. In these areas, the laboratory collaborates with parasitologists in the regions of the Russian Federation. In recent years, the laboratory's main methodological approach has become the comprehensive study of parasites identified in nature, including the study of their morphology by light and scanning electron microscopy, as well as obtaining nucleotide sequences of taxonomically informative genome regions.
One of the main goals of the laboratory's research remains the reconstruction of the evolutionary history of nematodes, since representatives of the class Nematoda are unique among other major taxa of parasitic organisms in the number of clearly related groups of parasitic and free-living forms.
