Main tasks of the Laboratory: developing the theory and practice of harmonizing human-bird relations based on monitoring and the study of the behavior and ecology of species, primarily rare, colonial, and economically significant ones.
The Laboratory currently conducts research in the following areas:
- bird biodiversity, monitoring of rare and economically important species;
- theoretical and practical study of coloniality in birds;
- ecological-ornithological monitoring;
- minimizing/preventing bird-caused damage by managing their behavior at economically important facilities without harming the birds;
- bird and habitat conservation;
- acoustic communication in birds;
- feather morphology (pterylology).
The Laboratory is the only one in Russia conducting identification studies of the microstructure of single feathers and/or their fragments, in particular for the needs of aviation ornithology.
The Laboratory coordinates the activities of departmental and academic institutions in the field of applied ornithology within:
- the International Committee on Applied Ornithology,
- the European and International Bird Strike Committees,
- the RAS Scientific Council on Biodeterioration.
