The Hydrobiological Station «Lake Glubokoe,» founded in 1891 on the shore of Lake Glubokoe (Ruza uyezd, Moscow Governorate) by Moscow University professor N.Yu. Zograf, is now the oldest institution of its kind in Russia and the world. Over its long history, several generations of scientists who made significant contributions to science have worked here. The Hydrobiological Station «Lake Glubokoe» is currently overseen by the IEE RAS Laboratory of Ecology of Aquatic Communities and Invasions (headed by Academician Yu.Yu. Dgebuadze). Staff of the Laboratory of Lower Vertebrate Behavior and the Laboratory of Tropical Technologies also work here on a permanent basis. Students of the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University undertake annual summer practicals on Lake Glubokoe, and international cooperation is carried out. Current research at the station includes long-term monitoring of zooplankton, fish, and amphibians, the study of their spatial distribution, behavior, and migrations, the study of bottom sediments, and the testing of industrial materials under natural conditions.
