V.N. SUKACHEV LABORATORY OF BIOGEOCENOLOGY

The Laboratory of Biogeocenology was organized in 1963 by the founder of the study of biogeocenosis, Academician V.N. Sukachev, within the V.L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Following the death of Dr. Sukachev in 1967 the Laboratory was named after him. In 1978, together with the Malinki Biogeocenological Station, the Laboratory was transferred to the Institute of Evolutionary Animal Morphology and Ecology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Several research units merged with the Laboratory in 1985, which was then renamed the V.N. Sukachev Laboratory of General Ecology and Biogeocenology. In 1993 the Laboratory reassumed its original name. In 2006, during a reorganization of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Laboratory was merged with the Historical Ecology Group.  The status of the Sukachev Laboratory of Biogeocenology as an independent unit within the Institute of Ecology and Evolution was restored in May 2014.
