The Laboratory for Ecological Monitoring of Nuclear Power Plant Regions and Bioindication was established in 1987 to conduct research on the conservation and rational use of wildlife in areas where nuclear facilities are located. From 1987 to 2003, the laboratory was headed by Dr. Sci. (Biol.) I.N. Ryabov.
The laboratory took part in developing measures to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. The effects of the Chernobyl radiation disaster on living organisms were studied, and a number of patterns in the accumulation and redistribution of radionuclides in animals and in the biota as a whole were formulated.

The laboratory's main objective is to investigate the stability of homeorhesis in animals exposed to innovative materials and radionuclides. This is addressed through a comprehensive study of various body systems at different levels — from the molecular to the morphological.
