The laboratory was organized in 1950 by Prof. S.N. Bogolyubsky, Dr. Sci. (Biol.), who headed it until 1978. Initially the unit was called the Laboratory of Farm Animal Morphology; from 1967 it became the Laboratory of Animal Domestication Problems. Under S.N. Bogolyubsky's leadership, a large body of work was carried out on the origin and morphology of domestic animals and their wild relatives (mainly using histological methods). From 1979 to 2013, the laboratory was headed by Prof. V.N. Orlov, Dr. Sci. (Biol.), under whom research in mammalian microevolution was begun. From the mid-1970s, chromosomal analysis was mainly used; allozyme analysis was subsequently introduced, and from the late 1990s, molecular methods as well. These new research directions were also reflected in changes to the laboratory's name: from 1984, the Laboratory of Mammalian Microevolution and Domestication; from 2005, the Laboratory of Mammalian Microevolution. Since 2014 the laboratory has been headed by L.A. Lavrenchenko, Dr. Sci. (Biol.).
