On February 15, 1968, on the initiative of V.E. Sokolov, a Group for the Study of the History of Biogeocenoses of the USSR was organized at IEMEZh, USSR Academy of Sciences, headed by Lev Georgievich Dinesman, and transferred to the Institute from the V.N. Sukachev Laboratory of Biogeocenology of the Botanical Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences. The Group was subsequently renamed the Group of Historical Ecology. L.G. Dinesman headed the Group until 1999. In 2006, the Group was merged with the Laboratory of Biogeocenology to form the V.N. Sukachev Laboratory of Biogeocenology and Historical Ecology. In 2014, the Laboratory of Historical Ecology was formed under the leadership of A.B. Savinetsky.
