About the Laboratory Emblem

Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is a species of mammal that went extinct relatively recently, during the Holocene. The only scientist to have seen live herds of sea cows in the Commander Islands in the 18th century was Georg Steller. For us, the sea cow has become a symbol of how a combination of different circumstances (primarily human impact and climate) can affect biological species.
