The Laboratory's history dates back to 1975, when the "Chernogolovka" Scientific-Experimental Base was established, and a group of staff members from the Laboratory of Morphology, Ecology, and Behavior of Higher Vertebrates (headed by Academician V.E. Sokolov) began studying the behavior and chemical
communication of a number of wild mammal species.
In 1998 it became a separate group, which in 2004 — after joining with the Applied Ecology group (L.M. Baskin, Dr. Sci. (Biol.)) — was given laboratory status (headed by V.V. Rozhnov).
