Laboratory History
1891
The «Lake Glubokoye» hydrobiological station — the oldest freshwater biological station in our country and in the world — was founded in 1891 on the initiative of the chairman of the Ichthyology Department of the Imperial Russian Society for the Acclimatization of Animals and Plants, Professor N.Yu. Zograf of Moscow University. Its first head was the future academician S.A. Zernov.
1972
The Group for the Ecology of Freshwater Animal Communities (later the Group for Freshwater Community Ecology), headed by Dr. Sci. (Biol.) N.N. Smirnov, was established at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Ecology of Animals of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1995 the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution RAS – IEE RAS) in 1972.
1999
The Group for the Ecology of Invasions and Interpopulation Interactions, headed by Yu.Yu. Dgebuadze, was established at IEE RAS on the initiative of Academician D.S. Pavlov in 1999. The group\'s creation was driven by the exceptional relevance of the problem of biological invasions and the need to develop research on this subject within the Department of Biological Sciences of the RAS. The group was the first and only (and remains, within the laboratory, the only) structural unit dealing with invasion-related subjects in the RAS system.
2006
The laboratory was formed in 2006 through the merger of the Group for Freshwater Community Ecology, led by Professor N.N. Smirnov, and the Group for the Ecology of Invasions and Interpopulation Interactions (led by Academician Yu.Yu. Dgebuadze).
Subsequently, the group\'s researchers developed their research not only at the biological station but also in other regions of Russia and the world, and made a substantial contribution to research on the systematics, faunistics, morphology and ecology of aquatic organisms.
