Integration of these areas of knowledge makes it possible to quantitatively assess the ecosystem functions of soils: the environment-forming function of soils as the basis of the biological diversity of terrestrial ecosystems, with undisturbed and technogenically transformed soils of various regions of Russia and some foreign countries as objects of study; and the information function of soils as a paleoclimatic archive, with buried soils and cultural layers exposed by sections, quarries, and archaeological excavations as objects of study.
