Key Results of the Laboratory 2023-2024

1. For the first time, a screening-level assessment was carried out of the health risk to the population from low doses of dioxins contaminating the environment beyond the sanitary zone of the "Lesnaya" production and consumption waste landfill (Serpukhov), by biomonitoring the content of these substances in animals from a natural bank vole population. The key finding of the analysis was the conclusion that exposure of mammals to these substances can create conditions for their bioaccumulation to levels hazardous to health. The scientific and practical significance of this result underlies the recommendation to urgently carry out a health-risk assessment using biomedical research methods.

2. Initial toxic effects in individuals from a natural population of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) inhabiting dioxin-contaminated territories beyond the sanitary zone of the "Lesnaya" production and consumption waste landfill (Serpukhov) were characterized by the expression of the following genes: ahr, cyp1a2, keap1, dnmt1, dnmt3adnmt3bLINE-1 and B1-SINE. Analysis of their expression patterns showed a reasonably good association with the processes that trigger the mechanisms underlying the formation and development of various forms of environmentally-associated pathology, including various forms of cancer. The data obtained will help improve biomonitoring methods for assessing and characterizing the genetic effects of dioxin-related ecotoxicity.

3. A new methodological approach for studying and assessing ecotoxicity in dioxin-contaminated territories near production and consumption waste landfills has been developed and tested. It is based on biomonitoring the lifelong effects of congeners of these substances, highly toxic to humans, on a model mammal species (bank vole), in relation to the expression of marker genes in liver cells. Carcinogenic potential, calculated using a method we developed and patented, was adopted as the main ecotoxicity criterion. Recommendations have been substantiated for using this methodological approach at the initial (screening) stage of assessing the health risk to the population from low (below MPC) doses of dioxins contaminating the environment.
