The laboratory's history dates back to a special zoological laboratory founded in 1893 by Academician A.O. Kovalevsky. It was later headed by the well-known zoologists Academicians V.V. Zalensky and N.V. Nasonov. After a 1925 reorganization into the Laboratory of Experimental Zoology and Morphology, the morphology division of this institution, located in Leningrad, was headed by Professor D.M. Fedotov. In 1935, this division became part of the newly created Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Paleozoology in Moscow, first as a department, and from 1936 as the Laboratory of Invertebrate Morphology. The main focus of research was on the evolution and phylogeny of invertebrates. From 1966, the laboratory was headed by G.A. Viktorov, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1967 it was renamed the Laboratory of Invertebrate Morphology and Ecology. Research at that time was concentrated mainly in entomology. In 1974, the laboratory was headed by Professor V.A. Sveshnikov. In 1984 it was renamed the Laboratory of Ecology and Morphology of Aquatic Invertebrates, and in 1992, the Laboratory of Ecology and Morphology of Marine Invertebrates. Since 1999, the laboratory has been headed by Professor T.A. Britayev, Doctor of Biological Sciences.
