The laboratory was established in 1993 by order of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences to study the consequences of chemical warfare in Vietnam, in particular to determine polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans — the most toxic chemical compounds known in the world.
