In 1956, USSR Academy of Sciences Corresponding Member Professor G.V. Nikolsky established the Laboratory of Ichthyology at the Institute of Animal Morphology (now the Institute of Ecology and Evolution), which he led until 1977. In 1967 the Laboratory of Ichthyology was divided into two parts: Ecology of Lower Vertebrates, and Behavior of Lower Vertebrates. Professor M.I. Shatunovsky was Chief of the Lower Vertebrate Ecology Laboratory from 1977 to 2014. In 2006, the Group on Ecology and Morphology of Fish Ontogenesis (headed by Dr. G.I. Ruban) became part of the Laboratory.

Currently, Laboratory staff conduct research activities on a broad range of themes, including: Fish evolutionary ecology (ecological mechanisms of formation of species and ecomorphs, ecological-genetic aspects of gynogenesis, intra- and interpopulational variability of certain features of fish as the basis for appearance of adaptations); Ecology of specific fish species and fishery composition of aquatic communities (variations in life and reproductive cycles, fish reproductive ecology, growth, feeding, dynamics of commercially important fish populations); Effects of human impact on fish populations, including commercial fisheries and aquaculture (ecology of invasive species, damage to reproduction and development, ecotoxicology, evaluation of stocks and rational use of commercially important species, refinement of aquaculture technologies, including development of original technologies for formation of clonal lines of sturgeon); Biodiversity conservation (phylogeny and systematics of specific fish groups, faunistics and zoogeography, development of measures for protection of rare and endangered fish species).
