The inter-laboratory facility of Remote Earth Sensing and Thematic Deciphering in Ecology was organized in 2016 at the initiative of Academician V.V. Rozhnov, based on the Group on Ecoinformation Systems and Space Monitoring established in 1988 by Academician V.E. Sokolov at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Animal Ecology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The Group was headed by Professor-Doctor of Technical Sciences G.I. Belchansky. During the reorganization of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution in 2006, the Group’s employees joined the Laboratory for Biodiversity Conservation and Bioresources Use.

The inter-laboratory facility performs interdisciplinary research aimed at obtaining new knowledge about various processes and phenomena occurring in nature using aerospace methods and technologies; it develops system-wide principles for creating and conducting multi-level integrated monitoring of the environment and sources of anthropogenic impacts on it using remote sensing tools; and it develops methods and software for processing aerospace data.

Inter-laboratory facility staff conduct long-term research on the Polar Bear Study Program in the Russian Arctic, which is being implemented as an independent project of the Permanent Expedition of the Russian Academy of Sciences to study the animals of the Russian Federation Red Book and other especially important animals of Russia. Data have been obtained on the state of polar bear populations in the Barents, Kara and Chukchi Seas. Seasonal changes in Arctic habitat parameters are monitored year-round using remote sensing data.
