Headed by Marina V. Kholodova, Dr. Biol. Sci.
The inter-laboratory facility of Molecular Diagnostics of the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian Academy of Sciences was organized in 2003.
The main task of the facility is to assist the Institute’s staff and graduate students in organizing and conducting molecular-genetic research whose work plans call for such tasks. In cases of joint projects, investigations may be carried out by staff, graduate and undergraduate students from other organizations. Facility staff also conduct scientific research on independent topics.
The inter-laboratory facility is equipped to extract DNA and RNA from various biological organisms using methods appropriate to the designated task and type of material; to amplify the necessary parts of the genome; to determine DNA nucleotide sequences (Sanger Method), to identify the allelic composition of microsatellite loci and single nucleotide substitution by automatic capillary electrophoresis; and to perform complex analysis of multi-copy DNA segments by cloning.
The equipment and methods used in the facility allows for: carrying out phylogenic research; analysis of phylogeography, intraspecies and intrapopulational structure, and the population diversity characteristics of various organisms; identifying species in biological materials; carrying out individual genotyping which allows evaluation of the abundance of animal groups and patterns of territorial use based on repeated encounters of individual biological material; assessment of the potential wellbeing of individuals and populations through analysis of functionally significant regions of the genome.
