About

The Laboratory of Ecology, Physiology and Functional Morphology of Higher Vertebrates was established in 1998 following the reorganization of the Laboratory of Morphology, Ecology and Behavior of Higher Vertebrates led by Academician V.E. Sokolov.

Professor E.I. Naumova was Chief of the Laboratory until 2013. In 2007 the group studying biological foundations for the conservation and management of vertebrate resources joined the Laboratory. In 2019 the Laboratory was merged with the Laboratory of Morphological Adaptation of Vertebrates headed by Dr. O.F. Chernova.

The Laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research on organism and community ecology, functional and evolutionary morphology, ecophysiology, biological diversity, genetics, biotechnology. The studies encompass a broad spectrum of biological subjects, from molecular to ecosystem levels of biological organization. The following topics of basic and applied research are currently being developed: principles and pathways of evolutionary changes in various morphofunctional systems; mechanisms for highly effective utilization of plant food and molecular genetics of intestinal tract microbiota in animals having various systematics and ecological specialization; heat exchange in higher vertebrates and the role of the integumental tissues in their thermal regulation; locomotion adaptations; development of scientific bases for rational use of bioresources; development of telemetry systems for scientific research.
